Yes, Garmin is known for GPS devices before smartwatches and fitness trackers were a thing. This watch locks on to GPS and GLONASS natively without any app. In fact, all of its functions work great without app including setting alarms and starting workouts. The only think you need the smartphone for are the connect alerts about phone calls, texts and some apps that load map data or data from internet, etc. The watch can even calculate the sunrise/sunset/moonrise/moonset times every day without any internet/app connection.
