The device has an Optical Heart Rate Sensor. The optical heart rate sensor on your Garmin optical heart rate device uses light to penetrate your skin and estimate your heart rate. This allows you to get heart rate information without the need for an external sensor. You may also go to support.garmin.com for FAQ's on Optical Heart Rate and you may reach out directly to our product support team from that page. Debbie with Garmin Debbie with Garmin
