“It looks like there is a heating element/coil at the back of the unit. Is this supposed to be heating/glowing during convection bake? It appears that only the top heating element is glowing - as I would expect with broil, but not with convection.”

There's a fan in the back of the unit to circulate the warmed air during the convection baking. The only heating coil is in the top of the unit.
