Someone reviewed this microwave and said that when the night light is on the microwave heats up. I want to know if this is true. null

The lights & area underneath get very hot including the area inside the microwave. GE is saying this is normal but I think it needs to be a recall. My last microwave never got this hot. I’m even afraid of a fire. They say don’t leave the light on long. Why is it a nightlight then & what do you do if you’re letting something simmer on the stove for a while….you can’t leave the light on? This is poor quality manufacturing. They need to fix this. They’re going to wait till it causes fires??

Absolutely does.  I just aimed my heat gun at it when the cooking light was on and I had not been cooking and it was 270 degrees... way hotter than boiling.  You will be burned if you touch it.  
Hours of a nightlight will also be hot because halogen bulbs are never coolish like LED bulbs.
I consider it a safety hazard.

I also have concerns
 I have been through a fire before in 2015. I bought a 2023 Ge mirowave a couple of weeks ago. That is the first thing i noticed was the light being extremely hot to touch. I am going to return it.

I totally agree! Way too hot. I just replaced my 4 year old GE microwave because the night light actually started smoking. Truly disappointing because the one I looked at and thought I was getting from Lowe’s had a screw in incandescent night light bulb. Turns out they had not updated to sync with GE’s product lines for model number changes and what was delivered and installed has a halogen bulb!!!! Yes … this one gets hot too!!!

Do NOT buy this microwave! We moved into our home and this is the microwave that is over the range. If you turn the Cooktop light on for better viewing what you are cooking on the stove top the inside of the microwave heats up to a scary level. We left the light on while watching tv. When we came back to the kitchen and opened the microwave which had not been used for heating/cooking all day long the splatter cover had melted!!!!!!!

Bought GE microwave in 2023 and same problem. Makes turntable plate really hot. Pulled bulb because I’m worried about a fire. Bulb doesn’t look damaged at all after that extreme heat. Looking for led bulb

The inside bottom of the microwave gets really hot directly above the cooktop halogen light. So hot that it caused a burn spot

Just purchased GE microwave and the light under it got so hot it actually burnt my hand . The problem is with the  bulb I replaced it with a LED 20 watt equivalent  bulb and now it does not get hot to the touch at all . Mine took a H8 base bulb .

Yes  I purchased my GE over the range microwave 4 months ago in may 2024. The surface light gets extremely hot inside the microwave even when I'm not heating any food. It burns my hand. I'm afraid if I leave it on for over 15 minutes it could catch on Fire. I made several calls to GE, on hold for 20 minutes . After explaining the issue I was placed on hold  again for a very long time I was disconnected.

Yep, purchased mine (model JVM7195SK6SS) in February 2025 and noticed the turn table plate was hot to the touch when surface light was on. This is not good. Come on GE!

Just bought and installed the micowave the night light gets burning hot even the plate inside this was the replacement model. Tried a different bulb and it stopped working.
Either have to not use the light or return.
Think GE SHOULD DO SOMETHING.

The surface light on my brand new microwave is 322 degrees. Here’s what came up in a search:
A surface light on the bottom of an over-the-range microwave heating to 322°F is dangerously hot and exceeds safety standards for external surfaces. A halogen or incandescent bulb is likely causing this issue. 
A temperature this high poses a significant burn and fire hazard. For context, water boils at 212°F, and a surface at 322°F can cause a severe burn on contact.

We noticed that on the brightest level, it was hot to the touch, both inside the microwave and the glass stove top underneath, so anytime we used it we would only use the lower brightness level. However, it was still too hot and over time caused what you see in the picture, plus shattered the glass piece below the bulb and most recently melted wires above the bulb, causing it to not function properly. We had a repairman fix it, but it didn't last. We're replacing now. Regardless of what GE says, nothing about this is normal.

I left my light on low over night and in the morning i opened the microwave and it was warm. Then i touched the bottom and it burnt my fingers! It was extremely hot. Think GE would have a better way to have a light and not overheat the unit. In fact the light isn't bright enough to cook by.  At first i thought a bulb was burnt out, but then discovered it was a LED. Not happy with purchase and its not even one year old

A GE representative just left my house to check on the very hot surface light on the microwave. The guy told me it was ‘normal’. GE knows about it for many years and has done nothing about it. Only advice is to not leave the surface light on for long periods of time, don’t touch the light and don’t let children touch the light. The guy actually burned his hand when he touched the light, but still says it is normal. Halogen light uses less energy and lasts longer, so I guess sacrificing safety for using less energy.

2025 and it is still true. Brand new microwave and it burnt my husbands fingers when he went to pop pocorn. They ship the unit with a 50 watt halogen...but if you look at the GE replacement parts, the replacement bulb is a 20 watt Halogen. We replaced our with the 20 watt and so far it seems much better, but we ofcourse do not have the same illumination on the range. CRAZY that GE didn't fix this!!!

Yes it is too hot i can put my butter in the microwave and it will melt without programing the microwave on! Can't leave the light on over night it gets to hot!

The light area gets warm / hot when the light is on. There are 2 bulbs. The manual says that they can be up to 50 watts each for 100 watts total when the lights are on BRIGHT. In the night position it seems they are in series so each would be at half power. 25 or 50 watts isn't that much power and may get warm, but not hot.

Hello - this is Nancy at GE Appliances and I am happy to help you. Cooking foods in a microwave oven for an extended period of time can cause heat transfer to not only the internal oven walls and floor, but to the external cabinet, as well. In addition to the heat that is generated outward from the food being cooked, the oven interior lamp and the magnetron tube will also contribute to external heat transfer. This condition is considered normal. It should be noted that internal and external temperatures after extended cooking will vary, naturally, depending on the type of food prepared and the length of the cooking time. On Spacemaker over-the-range microwaves, if the cooktop lights are left on full power for prolonged periods, the oven cavity floor will become hot to the touch. If prolonged light use is desired, the Night Light setting may be selected to reduce the light level in both bulbs, in turn reducing some of the heat transfer to the oven cavity floor. (The Night Light level of light is achieved by reducing the voltage to the bulb. This half voltage does not affect the life of the bulb.) Please also note that the floor of the microwave can be very hot after popping popcorn. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking with us!
