Hi Jeanne - This washer uses auto-load sensing technology. The washer will automatically measure (sense) the load size and adds just the right amount of water to suit the load. Therefore, the larger/heavier the load, the more water usage. For heavily soiled clothes, choose the Heavy soil setting (Colors or Whites). Also, the chart on page 7 of the Owner's Manual will help you match the items to be washed with the best washer cycle settings. Bulky Items cycle automatically provides a maximum fill wash water level to wash bulky items and incorporates a deep fill rinse to effectively rinse bulky items.
