I have a gap of 1.5 inches either side which is enough for the door to open fully (the handle of the door extends beyond the wall when fully open). If your wall is full or very deep, it would be wise to allow 2.5 inches next to the wall so that it will accommodate the fridge door handle when the door is fully open.
