• Hi Minnesotagal- This is Sue at GE Appliances. Thanks for considering our GE Washer! GTW330ASKWW is not an HE washer. While HE detergents are recommended in our washers for optimum wash performance, it is not required. Thanks for checking with us!

• I just got and I use just normal laundry detergent but less than in the 20 year old machine I had. I hope that helps
