“If the width of the AC is 18.6 inches wide why is the minimum width 24.5 inches? Will it not fit in my 23.5 inch wide window?”

Hi Spo - Thanks for your interest in GE! Window air conditioners are equipped with accordion side panels. When installed with these panels, min./max. window opening width requirement is 24-1/2" /36". Keep in touch at GEAppliances.com. Sue
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The unit comes with sides that expand to fit various window openings. It expands & contracts lick the sides of an accordion. Those attached side units add some overall width as they are framed in a sturdy plastic rectangular frame which they have to account for in a "minimum width" estimation. If the opening in your window has "slots" that the window slides up and down in (assuming you have that type of window operation), then if the measurement from the INTERIOR of the slot (or groove) is the one you should use and not the exterior--- so if you have an extra 1/2 inch on the INTERIOR of the window slot (or more) then this unit may fit.
