Yes, lid can be open. i start washer and put in detergent while it's filling, then add clothes to make sure water level covers them. even though these are supposed to clean good with less water, guess i just am not always confident there is enough water. had old washer before this purchase, probably 28 years old. very different. You can also open lid once it starts to wash in case you wanted to check water level or add something you forgot. per directions, when you close lid and press the pause button for the washer to start back, there is a short delay and water will run in there a little before it starts to wash.
