Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The model 680 uses the "infuser" wash plate, while the 685 uses the "agitator" to move clothing in the wash tub. They are both HE washers, which means it senses the wash load and adds only the amount of water necessary to clean the clothes, which is usually less than the height of the clothes. You have the option to deep fill or add 3 gallons at a time to your preference. As for balance, it does a pretty good job of balancing based on my experience so far. And for stains, it's always best to remove stains immediately, especially in non-synthetic materials, such as cotton, silk, etc. Use a fabric safe spot treatment if you wait to wash the garment. Search on-line for recommended spot removal methods, since they vary widely.
