The grates on this unit are made of porcelain enamel on a heavy cast iron (w/ rubber feet). The porcelain enamel coating over cast iron allows for easier cleaning, prevents rusting, and provides a finished look. As highlighted by the owner's manual, the finish on the grates may discolor or chip if you operate the burner for an extended period of time without cookware on the grate. -- We hope this answer was helpful.
