“Hi, is the stainless steel at the top where the dials are real stainless steel or painted? If painted, will the "steel" color rub off with constant cleaning? Also, is there a lip at the top back of the cooktop to catch spills? Thanks!”

Hi - Thanks for considering GE Model JS645SLSS! Yes, the control panel is stainless steel and can be cleaned with a mild soap and water or stainless steel cleaner. Mine is real stainless steel, not painted and yes there is a lip at the back to catch spills.

Dials seem to be stainless steel, and I've had no issues cleaning them. I don't think the color will rub off. There is a lip along the sides and back of the cooktop to catch spills.
