“There is metal piece looks like some sort of vent that is to be attached at the back of the stove. If I attach it then the stove will protrude much farther out due to a 1/2 inch deep piece of granite on the wall behind stove.Is this piece essential?”

Hello, thank you for your question. The part that you are referring to is the rear trim piece. The rear trim piece is necessary for your range to properly function as it ensures proper airflow around the unit. While we do not anticipate that you will have any issues with your range, should something occur and the cause were to be from installation issues concerning the rear trim piece, you would not be covered under your range's one-year limited manufacturing warranty. It also helps with heat, but if you don't have gas line concerns and you have a granite wall, you're probably fine to leave it off. Official response from GE will probably be different.
