They recommend that you use a new cord. I did buy the new cord, but it ended up being the wrong type, so I was forced to use the cord off the old unit, which had no signs of electric arcing between the wires and the coating on the wires was not broke down in any spots. I would not reuse a cord if it showed any frayed spots in plastic covering or burned areas from heat.
