“If I elect to use the side venting option on this dryer, do I still need to leave 4 inches clearance in the rear of the dryer? I have about 31” of clearance in my laundry closet from front to back but plenty of room for side venting.”

No. You only need the clearance for the vent pipe, whichever side you choose.

Hi Bobesco- Per the Installation Instructions, minimum clearance between dryer cabinet and adjacent walls or other surfaces is 1". Consideration must be given to provide adequate clearance for installation and service.
