That is not recommended. You could. You must frame it in, because the unit is only designed to operate in one orientation, as in a double-hung window.

The unit is designed to be held in place by the window sill on the bottom and the sash on the top. You would need to construct some form of mounting bracket to hold the unit, as well as some way of blocking off the upper portion of the window that is not filled by the unit.
