Hello - this is Nancy at GE and I am happy to help you. The self-clean cycle saves time, money, and energy. The oven is cleaned by heat, at temperatures above normal cooking temperatures, which causes soil to disappear from the oven. A device in the oven, called a smoke-eliminator, further converts soil into an essentially odorless colorless vapor. A slight odor may be detected the first few times the oven is cleaned. I hope this helps! Thank you for contacting GE!
