A:AnswerJust replaced my almost 15 year old GE JVM1790SK (can't get replacement parts like a keypad) with a GE PVM9179 today, and was very pleasantly pleased that the old mounting ledge fit the new nicrowave and was at the correct height. I did not use the new.mounting bracket since the old one had several more mounting screws into the wall studs along the vertical part of the old bracket.
Everything seems to have come together nicely. New top shelf holes for the new support screws, however, will still have to be drilled.
GE did a very wise thing in keeping the mounting bracket and especially the exhaust
opening compatible. This is a strong factor in favor of staying with GE if replacing a JVM1790.
Does GE concurr this is acceptable for a rear venting JVM1790SK with a new PVM9179?

PS Attention GE Microwave marketing guys, the LED stove top light should have an option for a 3000K color to match other counter LIGHTING.
A:AnswerHey there,
Thank you so much for reaching out. This is a great question to ask! Our over the range models should not be installed in a space where the bottom vent is covered. This could cause heat issues if the vent or lights were to turn on. Reach out if you have any other questions! Mike@GEA
A:AnswerI would think the manual would explain the different venting options. My best guess is that you do need the fan. The unit will then vent into the room, instead of outdoors.you will need to check the manual for the correct fan positioning. If I remember correctly, it came setup up to vent vertically.
