Hi there! Thanks for reaching out to check on this. This icemaker is built to operate with or without a water filter. If you'd like to purchase a filter to filter the water you pour into the water reservoir, you can do that. The water filter does need to be replaced around every 6 months depending on the amount of use. If you don't want to filter the water, you can skip the installation of a water filter and the icemaker will work as designed. It just comes down to preference. We're confident the Opal Icemaker will be a great addition to your home. Kind regards. Julia@GEAppliances
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The charcoal water filter is an optional accessory that mounts in the bottom of the water reservoir in leu of the included ultra fine metal mesh strainer. If you plan to run on tap water with an objectionable taste then the optional filter will result in a more satisfactory tasting ice, but again, the water filter unit is optional and costs about $30 with frequent replacement potential depending on tap water quality.
