• The side tank is optional. It will require a lot more attention that way, but it can function without it. I find that my family of 4 goes through about a gallon of distilled water a day.

• You do not have to use the side tank, it’s just convenient to not fill the reservoir as often.

• You do not have to use the side tank with your Opal Ice Maker, as it is an optional accessory. You can simply add water directly to the reservoir.
