This is true. To see if your phone is compatible do the following: Go to Settings, then Application Manager, then All Apps. You should see something called GearVR (or similar) in the list if your phone has been updated to use GearVR.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I got a software update for my Note 5 from Tmobile (my provider) just before the Samsung Gear VR 2015 edition was launched. Not sure how this works when you are using an international unlocked version of the Samsung latest smart phones.
