You can create a Nintendo account for free but to be able to play online with other players games like Smash Bros or using the Nintendo 64 emulator you’ll have to buy a monthly subscription. I advise you buying the one year option it’s like $20 for one year.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you plan on playing online multiplayer games, you'll need the online pass. It's relatively cheap compared to Sony's and Microsoft's online plans. You can also purchase games from the online shop without needing the online pass. However, I have noticed that whenever I'm out and about, if I try to launch a game while I'm offline, it will try to check for a license. This means that you won't be able to play games you own unless you connect to wifi for authentication purposes. To avoid this, I suggest buying cartridges instead of downloading titles. Just be sure to get the latest updates before heading out.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, it is stand alone useable depending on the game, before buying games, research whether the game you wish to purchase requires switch online (which would then require a subscription).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, if you buy games for the device and you’re happy playing the games by yourself (or locally with friends, if it’s a local co-op game and you get extra controllers), then there’s no need for the online subscription. The paid subscription service has some perks (online back-ups of game data; online multiplayer for some games; some exclusive expansion packs for a few games; and access to a game library of old school classic games — depending on which subscription tier you pay for)… However, a subscription isn’t required or needed at all, unless you really want those little extra online perks. (Note: You can purchase standalone games online without a subscription as well, and lots of titles go on sale every month.)
