I think you would be as secure with this product as you would be with any other. We were in the same situation and I purchased one of these for each of our family members. The security of the units is equal to the security of the opener (the motor hanging in your garage) because they "pair" with the opener the same way a manufacturer's unit would. The only way someone else could use this to open your garage is if they had access to your opener and paired their unit to it (this usually requires a person to press a pairing button on the opener hanging inside your garage--probably unlikely that someone would do this).
