“Without a remote, where are the settings to adjust the heat and flames?”

• There are no settings to adjust the heat or flames. There are only two power switches found at the top right corner of the fireplace. One to turn on the flames and the other to turn on the heat (one setting). It does put out quite a bit of heat. It heats up my husband's den in no time.
