• On these older versions you had to learn how to back spin the ball yourself. It is done by pushing down on the ball and spinning it as fast as you can keeping downward pressure on the ball, it is like real golf your short irons will spin a lot tapering down for the long irons, but I have gotten 3 and 5 woods to backspin. Hope this helps.

• Backspin didn't get implemented until later versions. These are old school GT games.
