Unfortunately this is not capable of streaming independently it needs a device to control it.

The Roku and fire stick work independently though

You cast to the chromecast not from the chromecast. It’s plugged into a hdmi port on your tv and you need wireless internet to connect it to. You cast from computer/phone/iPad to your tv through the chromecast.

Chromecast requires a phone/pc/etc to tell it what you want to watch, send pause/rewind controls, etc. The actual video stream, though, is sent to the little puck directly, as opposed to being bounced around your home network from your phone.

End result though: no way to watch anything at all without using your phone or something to control it.

Short answer is you need a separate device(phone,ipad, etc..) The Chromecast can only be setup/controlled through another device using the Google Home app which allows you to search through what is available on Netflix and other streaming services but will direct you to download/open Netflix app to play content.
