I suspect it depends on the monitor. I tried the original Chromecast as the new one is not easy to reach at the moment. The monitor I tried it on has 1680x1050 resolution and DVI input. I only got 640x480 input from the Chromecast and the picture was cut off. It's possible that if you have 1080p monitor it would work,
