• ambient light. If it's outside with no light available it still works great with the night vision. No lights inside home, it still has very good night vision. I am happy with mine.

• During the day, the sun or any inhouse lighting is your light source. At night it switches to night vision and there are a ring of LEDs that provide the light so you can see the dark. It does a pretty darn nice job in both day and night, with nice clear images either way.

• It has no built in lighting. It only records the light that is already there.
