• No. You have to connect it to the wires in the home. You might need to replace the transformer if it's not at least 16v. Very easy to do.

• You have to have it wired to something, it can't just be free standing. If you want to add new wiring to it you can and that way you don't have to use your existing doorbell. But that would be the only way. Because the wiring is needed to power the device
