“If I get Nest smoke detector and put them in hallways, but then have standard (not Nest) smoke alarms in bedrooms, does the Nest still work as normal? reason for this is that they cost so much that I am not keen on getting one in every room/hallyway.”

You posted the question on the nest thermostat, but I also own the nest protect (smoke/co2) alarm. The nest protect does not sync with other smoke alarms. Yes, it will work like it normally does; it just will not communicate when other alarms go off. If you purchase another nest protect those will communicate to each other and when one goes off the other will too.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.They should. Depending on which you get, wired or battery operated they should at the minimum communicate with each other. Wired might work with the other ones but not 100% sure.

The interconnect wire allows standard smoke alarms to communicate with each other (i.e. one goes off they all go off). Whether the power is on or off, they can still talk to each other over the wire. The Nest Protect seems to use two wireless protocols to communicate with each other: standard Wifi and then a secondary mesh network if power down (and therefore probably no wifi available). I would check this out before mixing regular and nest smoke detectors.
