• You do not have to use the plate. It is provided for you to cover the previous box. You can absolutely get the sleek look if there is no hole to cover. I had to use the plate, but I honestly don't even notice it anymore.

• Yes, you can skip the wall plate entirely. Really, the wall plate is for people in the situation where there's going to be a big hole left by the previous thermostat but you can skip it if you like. When we bought our house we removed the old thermostats but there was going to be visible holes left and we didn't have the original paint. The wall plate just covered the holes.

• Yes, you can mount the thermostat directly to the wall with the steel wall plate. The white trim plate does not need to be used.

• It is not necesary to use the rectangular plate. It is nice to have to cover up holes if you are switching from a rectangular thermostat.

• I believe you can mount it directly to the wall, as the mounting plate is optional (unless you need it to cover a previously larger cut out in the wall from your old thermostat like we did).

• The wall plate isn't necessary. It depends on the size of the opening in the wall behind your current thermostat. I installed the wall plate horizontally rather than vertically and I think it looks rather nice.

• You do not need the wall plate. It is provided for cases where you may need to cover up holes or marks left behind by your previous thermostat. I believe they also sell a stainless steel plate option, in case you need it and prefer that look.
