Yes, it works in a similar manner to other programmable thermostats. When the ambient indoor temperature goes above or below the current setting, e.g., 55 degrees, then the Nest thermostat will turn on the furnace, keeping the temperature at 55 degrees.

I think for the first few years it controlled the temperature within one degree of setting. In recent years cooling cycle is very accurate but heating has a 4 degree temperature hysteresis meaning the actual temperature is 4 degrees below the set temperature.

Please try again later.If the heat is set to 55, the Nest would activate heating once the temperature drops to 54 degrees, as the Nest has a maintenance band of one degree to prevent additional wear and tear on the system.
