No need to mount the Nest on the ceiling... It's design allows much lower location... and I read a lot on these about a year ago and my understanding is that you can indeed control, operate, Silence it from the app. Here's a Copy and paste from the Nest website. "The new Nest Protect has been redesigned from the inside out. It has an industrial-grade smoke sensor, tests itself automatically, and lasts up to a decade. It's also the first home alarm you can hush from your phone without any extra hardware required. And just like the original Nest Protect, it tells you what’s wrong and can even alert your phone."

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, you can disarm the alarm via the Nest app. We recently bought five of the Nest Protect 2nd Generation Smart Smoke/Carbon Monoxide wired alarms to replace the outdated units in our home. Not only are these alarms chock-full of smart technology that integrates seamlessly with other Nest products (i.e. Next Thermostat), the units themselves are sleek and beautifully designed to match any decor. Some of the most notable features is the constant self-monitoring (several times per hour) of the units and the motion sensor night light which gives off an ambient glow when tripped (great for those mid-night restroom breaks). And with Nest Thermostat integration, the alarms can be configured to turn off the HVAC unit to eliminate the spread of smoke and/or carbon monoxide in the event of an emergency. I couldn't be happier with my decision to upgrade to these units.
