• Unfortunately Nest does not have a feature yet to give alerts but if you pair your Nest Account with IFTTT and you can setup mobile alerts!

• No, it works with the Nest thermostat, it's not intended to be a stand alone device. It is basically an extended sensor for NEST, thus any function the NEST can do, it can use the extended sensor for. I don't think you can use the NEST to alert you when it raises above a certain temperature.

• The Nest Temperature Sensor requires a 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat or a Nest Thermostat E in order to connect to the Nest app and read the ambient temperature in whatever room you place this in.
