From what i understand, the true unlocked phone has to be purchased from google shop directly. Then you can to go to carrier of your choice, you just need their sim card. There are update downloads you'll need to do yourself. But if you start with Verizon service, they can do all the updates for you in their store. I'm trying to make same choice, but i prefer T- mobile & hate verizon (their plans are pretty high for a single account). May buy unlocked phone & see if i can start month to month w/ verizon then switch carriers.
