“Are you charged a higher rate plan for use of the 5G? what if your area only has 4G? I don't want to be charged more monthly. Or does the extra cost only apply if you are in a 5G location?”

Depends on your plan. I have smart unlimited which does not include the faster 5g and I still get nationwide 5g. Don't bother paying for the faster 5g at this point it is only in a small number of areas.
