“When it says activate today does that mean I need to add a new line or service, or can I transfer my line to this phone?”

An existing line can be activated. But it has to be one of the major cell phone carriers. Like Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&t. If you have one of the less expensive carriers like cricket, for example, they will not activate it at the store
