“Can I purchase this device and activate LTE service (calls, texts, data) in store without having a phone line on the same carrier (e.g. Verizon)? My phone plan is excellent, but they don't offer smart watch plans, and I'm not switching my phone plan.”

if you want to make calls w/o a cell device being present then you will have to get the lte model and slap a smartwatch plan on it. If your happy with what you have then stick with the bluetooth/wifi model and you still can use the phone & message features, phone will just have to be close by.
