“What if I already have a contract with Verizon. How would this work if I want this phone over the Verizon phone I already have. My contract will be up in may of 17. I would very much like this phone added to my contract instead of the one on it”

You can do an early upgrade which depends on how much you currently have left on your phone. There are two options usually one is a pay off (pay off the remaining balance of your phone) or a pay up (a set fee verizon has to upgrade specifically). These are the only ways to upgrade before may 17th.
