Do I connect this to my existing wifi router or will it act as a mesh extender? I have an AC 1900 DST Router I upgraded I think last year or 2; I want to eliminate lags & also increase coverage on my garage ring spot cam. Do I just plug in & connect? null

Basically it wants to be a replacement of your existing wifi router. It absolutely wants to be the primary router. You can however double-NAT and have a separate network if you really want to keep your old network in place. Also you could make your existing router just be an access point in bridge mode, but you'd probably need an unmanaged switch to facilitate that (router switches tend to block certain types of fancy packets that unmanaged switches wont)

plug in and connect. you can wire node to garage if it is too far from the primary node

While you can use it (in parallel) with other routers, think of it as a stand alone system and connect it to your modem directly. While I'm not sure if it will work or not connected to an existing router (probably it would) that's not how it's designed to work. A mesh system will give extended range depending upon how many units you connect.
