“Do I absolutely need the app to install this product (the 3-pack) or can I just plug in the devices? I'm trying to get wifi all over my empty home to set up Security on it from afar. A friend can help, but doesn't live there. Suggestions welcomed.”

yes you need it so that you can communicate with the devices during setup. I remotely manage a family network using the app. It was really very simple, so If you can ask this question on a website, you can install your google wifi
