You do not need a smartphone or any other device to use GoPro cameras. While a smartphone paired to your GoPro camera can offer more options in how you use the camera, such as being able to change settings and activate the camera's functions remotely, you can also turn the camera on, start recording, take photos, and adjust basic settings directly with the camera.
