You can switch fairly easily as long as you don't have gloves on its a very small button on the back of the camera that lets you cycle, I personally have not used the photo mode because it is much easier to grab a still photo from your video, if you are taking alot of still photos I would suggest an underwater camera. I mainly use the Hero for Video and I have a Sony DSC-TX30 for underwater Stills and that takes amazing underwater pictures, It also has a Video mode in which you can click stills simultaneously while videoing although the battery dies pretty fast while taking lots of video so I got the HERO Session for my future videos
