No, the Hero3 and Hero3+ use GoPro - Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery AHDBT-301. The Hero4 Silver and Hero4 Black use AHDBT-401.

No it can't, the 3 batteries are larger in size. With GoPro making new models every so often they upgraded the batteries with the camera. So if you need the battery for the 4 just look for the thinner battery.
