• It is electric and it has back up batteries as well. It has to be plugged in. The batteries only maintain the time when unplugged. The screen is dark until electric power is back.

• Has to be plugged in. It has a spot for a 2 x AAA batteries for backup in case you lose power, the settings are saved.
