Hello rackman - In case of prolonged power failure, the surface burners can be lit manually. Hold a lit match near a burner and turn knob counterclockwise until the indicator is aligned with MAX. After the burner is lit, turn knob to desired setting. If the flame is extinguished, the safety valve intervenes by shutting off the gas to the burners. - TREY@HAIER
