• You should check filter every 3 months to see if it needs replacing. Idk about smokers but it helps with dust

• Thank you for your question. This Hamilton Beach Air Purifier will capture particulates from pet dander, dust, dust mite debris, pollen and mold/mildew spores. The Permanent filter never needs replacing and saves up to $49 a year versus a comparable filter.
