Thank you for your question. This unit captures particulates from pet dander, dust, dust mite debris, pollen and mold/mildew spores. Smoke carbon filters may be purchased to use in addition to the permanent filter.

This one does a great job filtering out pet dander and dust, but cigarette smoke is really difficult to get out of the air in my experience. Good luck!

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It helps a lot and makes a big difference!. During the day I place it in the living room and at night in the bedroom. Read about a activated charcoal filter that you can add to the purifier (especially for smokers) but have not researched or bought one as yet. I think the added charcoal filter would eliminate the smoke odor entirely, but, as I said, have not tried it yet. The Hamilton true air is a great value for the money. Is light-weight and easy to move.
