Does this tv have local dimming null

I believe this doesn't. The 65" model of the H8C series is noted to have local array dimming.

Have not looked so not sure, but there are different picture settings -- vivid, standard, theater (and several picture others) -- that appear to be in order of decreasing brightness.

Yes. This model has local dimming achieved through it's adaptive contrast feature which can be set at three levels: low, standard and high or can be turned off all together.
