Hi Lee, This is an Android TV. It is similar to Roku, in that you need an account to download apps. You will need a google account to access the play store to download apps. You can use it as a regular TV, however, without a google account. The Android TV Play Store is different than what you would see from your Android phone because you will only see compatible apps. If you want to be able to use specific apps, you should check that they are available before purchasing this TV. If you are coming from Roku, most of the same services are available.
